Deadline is reporting that the lead female character for Gambit will be Bella Donna Boudreaux.  Three actresses are currently testing for the role:

Rebecca Ferguson

Léa Seydoux

Abbey Lee

Rebecca Ferguson is currently riding high in her starring role opposite Tom Cruise in the critically acclaimed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.  Léa Seydoux is a French actress who’s had roles in Inglorious Basterds (2009), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).  She will also soon be seen in the upcoming James Bond installment Spectre.  Abbey Lee is an actress, musician, and fashion model.  Her most recent credit was playing the role of The Dag in this summer’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Just last week, the production seemed to be at risk due to some negotiation snags between Channing Tatum and 20th Century Fox.  It wasn’t clear as to what exactly was going wrong, but it was soon remedied and it was confirmed that Tatum was moving forward with Gambit in both producing and playing the lead role.

Created by Jim Lee and Scott Lobdell, Bella Donna Boudreaux made her first appearance in X-Men Vol. 2 #8 (May 1992).  Bella Donna met Remy LeBeau, the future Gambit, when the two were only children, and soon became friends.  In typical Romeo and Juliet fashion, the two came from rival guilds — Remy from the Thieves Guild and Bella Donna from the Assassins Guild.  As the two grew older, their rivalry intensified.  However, their fathers arranged a marriage between the two, hoping to unite the guilds.  After the wedding, Bella Donna’s brother, Julien, challenged Remy to a fight to the death.  Remy won, killing Julien.  This resulted in Remy being driven from New Orleans which led to his path in becoming Gambit and joining the X-Men.

The live-action incarnation of Gambit made his debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) — though his name only appeared in X2: X-Men United (2003) — and was played by Taylor Kitsch.  On May 13, 2014, Channing Tatum was confirmed to take over the role in a solo movie.

Gambit is still set for a release date of October 7, 2016.  It will be produced by Channing Tatum, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg, directed by Rupert Wyatt, written by Josh Zetumer from a treatment by Chris Claremont, and star Channing Tatum as Remy Etienne LeBeau / Gambit.
