Bam Smack Pow Cosplay Spotlight: AsianChan
Meet Cosplayer AsianChan
AsianChan has been involved in cosplay for 15 months. The structure and quality of AsianChan’s cosplay is truly top-notch. Intricate designs, expressive colors, and dedication show the true commitment of this cosplayer. Some favorite cosplays of AsianChan are Agunimon and Wargreymon from Digimon and Falco from Starfox, and she will soon be breaking out a new cosplay from the Power Rangers Mystic Force. Bam Smack Pow had the opportunity to interview AsianChan to find out about where her love of cosplay stems from.
Bam Smack Pow: Who or what inspired you to cosplay?
AsianChan: I loved seeing cosplayers at conventions, and some were very inspiring to see. And some discouraged me from making cosplay because theirs was so detailed. I wanted to do my own interpretations of the character and see how they would turn out.
BSP: Which character is your favorite to cosplay?
AC: Wargreymon is hands down my favorite character right now. I wish he was more mobile so I could explore more.
BSP: What costumes have provided the biggest challenge and rewards so far and why?
AC: Wargreymon is my biggest challenge. I always wanted to make him, but initially started with some other cosplays that looked easier just to gain experience. The greatest reward for me is the feeling when many people recognize my cosplay and want to snag a picture. That is so flattering when it happens to me, because I see other cosplayers getting so much attention for their amazing work.
BSP: What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying?
AC: I love to play video games and sports. I try to go to the gym daily. Right now, I am an assistant coach at my old high school for girls basketball.
BSP: Do you get to travel the country to different conventions? or are your local to one area?
AC: The farthest I have traveled to a con would be Anime Expo in Los Angeles and San Diego Comic- Con. I do plan to expand my travels maybe to the other side of the US, but we will see about different countries.
BSP: What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying?
AC: I would say start out small and work your way up. Ask other cosplayers for advice and watch a lot of tutorial videos to make sure you are using the right tools and materials to be comfortable while wearing your outfit. Also, don’t limit yourself to what you think you can or can’t do, but try new things and think outside of the box.
BSP: What show can fans expect to see you at next?
AC: I will be at SacAnime taking place September 4-6 and then SacAnime again in January of 2016. I make it a tradition to go to Fanime and Anime Expo as well.
