If you’ve watched the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer as many times as we have here at Bam Smack Pow, you’ve no doubt noticed one scene where Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg, seems to have Superman kneeling in front of him. That’s not an easy feat to accomplish, so it makes you wonder what’s up. Some kind of mind control? Is kryptonite involved somehow?
Maybe it’s nothing elegant or scientific at all. Umberto Gonzalez of Heroic Hollywood says he’s got the dirt on the “heinous act” for which Luthor is responsible, and why it gives him the upper hand over the Man of Steel.
First we have to make sure you were listening when it comes to potential spoilers …
Very good. Anyway, Gonzalez claims that Luthor kidnaps Martha Kent (Diane Lane, reprising her role from Man of Steel). The ace scooper goes on to remind readers that we’ve already seen how Superman reacts when his adopted mom is threatened, and it’s not pretty.
However, he’s also not going to do anything rash if her safety lies in the balance, which could easily explain why the Man of Tomorrow appears submissive in that trailer. It could help explain why he fights Batman as well, though that collision could be inevitable given the reaction of Bruce Wayne to the damage done in the climactic battle during Man of Steel.
There’s another question raised here too: does Luthor deduce Superman’s secret identity? Figuring it out and using it only for his own benefit — that is, not revealing it to the rest of the world so only he can benefit from it — is a very Lex thing to do.
All things to keep in mind as we wait for the next wave of heavy promotion for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is heading to theaters on March 25, 2016.
