When is a spinoff not a spinoff? When the people behind it say so, apparently.

Bobbi “Mockingbird” Morse and Lance Hunter were supposed to be getting their own spinoff from Agents of SHIELD. Then they weren’t. Now ABC has ordered a pilot for a series that will star the two of them titled Marvel’s Most Wanted. Only Variety, who broke the news, claim that the show “is not a spinoff, per se, but rather an entirely new project solely focused on the two characters to continue their story.”
Confused? So are we. The first thought is that maybe it would focus on Mockingbird and Hunter’s adventures prior to linking up with Phil Coulson’s crew, though the “continue their story” part seems to rule a prequel out. The title of the series could also be a hint. Maybe Bobbi and Lance end up on the run for some reason.
Since the pilot wouldn’t air until next fall, at the earliest, Adrienne Palicki (who plays Morse) and Nick Blood (Hunter) should be around for Season 3 of Agents of SHIELD. Just don’t be surprised if they’re written out along the way to free them up. That would seem to remove the chances of any serious drama involving the couple — like the Season 2 finale, where Hunter was almost killed walking into a trap using Mockingbird as bait — but then again, this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe we’re talking about. Anything could happen.
And hey, as long as Agents of SHIELD remains on the air, Bobbi and Lance can always return if their own series crashes and burns. Expect to hear a lot more about Marvel’s Most Wanted in the coming months.
