Marvel Cosplay Variants Take Over Line In October

Move over artists. Cosplayers are taking over.

Okay, not entirely. Marvel’s super hero comics in October, most of which will be brand new #1 issues, will still have traditional covers. But they will also have Cosplay Variants featuring a number of people dressed up as their favorite Marvel heroes.

Marvel announced 20 books getting the cosplay variants today, with a 21st title mysteriously labeled as “Classified” — which we took to mean it hasn’t been announced yet. The timing is certainly right, both because the series involved are all getting relaunched coming out of Secret Wars and because October contains the holiday that turns everyone into cosplayers, Halloween.

“Cosplayers are taking over,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Each convention I go to, it seems like there are more and more fans dressing up like their favorite Marvel characters. These homemade, hand-crafted costumes are so elaborate, it looks like they leapt off the comic page. The Cosplay Variant initiative is our way of supporting a community that supports us.”
