Legends Of Tomorrow: Atom Suit Is Really, Really Expensive
By Nick Tylwalk
Maybe it’s a good thing that Ray Palmer is extremely rich.

He’s also not exactly like his comic book counterpart, as he didn’t come up with the miniaturizing part of his super hero shtick until late in Season 3 of Arrow. In the interim, he devised a suit of powered armor that he called the A.T.O.M. suit, though we just refer to him as the Atom around these parts.
Anyway, it turns out that suit isn’t just expensive in the Arrow-verse, it costs a lot in real life too. DCLegends TV recently had a chat with Phil Klemmer, executive producer of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which is where Palmer (played by Brandon Routh) will be making most of his appearances in the upcoming TV season, and he gave some eyebrow-raising comparisons when discussing just how much money it takes to make the Atom come to life.
"The only challenge is how expensive his costume costs, and the danger that we actually injure him doing stunts, because his costume actually costs not just more than a car — more than, like, your average American home — so the scariest thing about Atom is I’m thinking, like, “when do you use a digital double, and when do you use Brandon?” I mean, obviously Brandon is irreplaceable."
It’s nice to hear that Routh’s safety comes first, but more than an “average American home” is pretty pricey.
Klemmer also doesn’t think there’s much chance of confusion among non-comic book fans when it comes to the Atom and Marvel’s Ant-Man, explaining that the differences between the two characters are far more extensive than their one obvious similarity.
"To me, Ray is a billionaire do-gooder with a secret and Paul Rudd (Scott Lang) is like a wisecracking cat burglar. So aside from the fact that they shrink, I don’t see a whole lot of overlap."
Couldn’t have said it better myself. The “billionaire do-gooder” will be a regular on Legends of Tomorrow, which is set to air on The CW during 2016.
