IGN is reporting that Glenn Morshower has been cast in the role of General Sam Lane — the father of Lois Lane and Lucy Lane — for CBS’s Supergirl.  The character has been described as “a powerful military lifer — and an overprotective father to both Lucy Lane and her sister, Lois. His arrival in National City stirs up trouble for Supergirl when he enlists her in a dangerous government initiative.”

Glenn Morshower is a well-established veteran actor who’s been active since 1976.  His various television credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, The X-Files, Millennium, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The West Wing, 24, Star Trek: Enterprise, Charmed, Friday Night Lights, Criminal Minds, Lie to Me, Law & Order, Dallas, NCIS: Los Angeles, Revolution, Agents of SHIELD, Wild Card, and Bloodline.

Notable film credits for the actor include Tango and Case (1989), Under Siege (1992), Star Trek Generations (1994), Air Force One (1997), Godzilla (1998), Pearl Harbor (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), The Island (2005), Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), and X-Men: First Class (2011).

Created by Robert Bernstein and Kurt Schaffenberger, the character of Sam Lane made his first appearance in Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #31 (November 1959).  The father of Lois Lane and Lucy Lane, Sam Lane was initially portrayed as a horse farmer.  In the Post-Crisis continuity, the character was rebooted to be a hard-hitting US Army General who’s at odds with his equally headstrong daughters.

This is not the first live incarnation of Sam Lane.  Past live incarnations include Superman: The Movie (1978) where Kirk Alyn (the first actor to play Superman in the Superman movie serial) played Sam Lane; Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman where Sam Lane was a cyberneticist and was played by Denis Arndt; and Smallville where Michael Ironside played Sam Lane as a Lieutenant General.

Sam Lane will make his appearance after the introduction of Lucy Lane, played by Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

CBS’s Supergirl is set to premiere on October 26, 2015.  The series was developed by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler, and Andrew Kreisberg, and will star Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers / Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.  Laura Benanti will having a recurring role as Alural Zore-El.  Guest stars will include Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Helen Slater as Eliza Danvers, Dean Cain as Jeremiah Danvers, Faran Tahir as The Commander, and Owan Yeoman as Vartox.
