When Steven Spielberg talks, people listen. Those people include Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and one of the key architects of what fans are calling the DC Cinematic Universe.

Spielberg recently gave his opinion on the state of super hero movies, explaining that he felt they were due to decline and perhaps resurface again someday in the same manner as Westerns. Naturally, this rubbed many fans the wrong way, given that we haven’t even hit the really packed 2016 to 2018 stretch that will see more super hero movies released than ever before.

When asked about those comments by Yahoo! Movies, Snyder admitted that Spielberg could be correct in his assessment, but also pointed out some key differences about the most iconic DC super heroes that could help them become the exceptions to the genre rule.

"He might not be wrong. I think it puts more pressure on us, the filmmakers, to not just crank out superhero movies for the sake of it. To me, the one thing I love working in the DC universe is that Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are American mythology. It’s not about making a superhero, it’s a mythological universe that we live in. That I hope stands the test of time. They stood the test of time. That’s hopefully the sort of magic bullet. But who knows what audiences will want in the future."

The conversation later turned to rumors about Batman v Superman, of which there have been many. Snyder specifically shot down one about his son playing Robin, while commenting more generally about how some rumors are on the mark and others go wildly astray.

"There are so many, it’s insanity. It’s funny because every now and then someone will touch on something that’s kind of true, but the next thing they say makes me realize that they took a wild guess. They’ll say something and I’ll say “Oh snap, they must have seen the script.” And then they’ll say, “And this happens!” And then I’ll go, They have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s fun for everyone to speculate and take shots and think of things and try to sell it. There’s an industry in selling your guess."

That’s … kind of true. It’s worth noting, though, that the reason that industry exists is because there’s a huge fan base hungering for more info. If anything, that’s evidence that what Snyder said about the ability of super heroes to withstand the test of time could easily be on the mark.
