Rumor: Rebecca Ferguson Is Top Choice For Captain Marvel
By Steve Lam
Originally in the running for Bella Donna Boudreaux in Gambit, Rebecca Ferguson seems to have switched to rival Marvel Studios for an even meatier, better role — Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel. According to Heroic Hollywood, Ferguson is being eyed to star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female superhero solo film.
When Ferguson dropped out of Gambit, the excuse was that she nabbed a starring role in DreamWorks’ adaptation of The Girl On The Train. After today’s rumor, her reasons for dropping out are certainly raising a few eyebrows.
Rebecca Ferguson is a Swedish actress who came to fame playing Elizabeth Woodville in the BBC’s The White Queen. She has also made other television appearances in Nya tider, Ocean Ave., Wallander, The Vatican, The Inspector and The Sea, and The Red Tent. Her stardom blew up even more this summer with her breakout performance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation starring Tom Cruise. Ferguson’s other film credits include Strandvaskaren (2004), A One-Way Trip to Antibes (2011), Vi (2012), Cold Night (2013), Hercules (2014), Despite the Falling Snow (2014), and Florence Foster Jenkins (2016).
Created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan, the character of Carol Danvers made her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #3 (March 1968). The character later made other appearances as her heroic alter-egos: as Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1 (January 1977); as Binary in Uncanny X-Men #164 (December 1982); and as Captain Marvel in Avenging Spider-Man Vol. 1 #9 (September 2012).
Carol Danvers was originally an officer in the US Air Force who meets Dr. Walter Lawson, the alter-ego of Captain Marvel. Caught in an explosion of a Kree device, Danvers sustains serious injuries. She later resurfaces with superhuman abilities and takes on the guise of Ms. Marvel. After many years, Danvers would take on the title of Captain Marvel in 2012.
Captain Marvel has a planned release date of November 2, 2018 where it will be part of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
