Oh, what a tangled web we weave when it comes to the love lives of super heroes. Mary Jane Watson has historically been the one true love of Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, but it appears she may be hooking up with a certain Armored Avenger in the months ahead.

A new article on Marvel.com announced today that Mary Jane will become a supporting cast member in the upcoming relaunch of Invincible Iron Man, written by Brain Michael Bendis. The image above is the cover to issue #4 by regular series artist David Marquez.

Marvel says Watson will be featured in “an unexpected new role,” with Bendis stating that he realized at a creative retreat that no one else was really using her, and that she fit into some ideas he already had.

"I sat with that for a while and I always go to this place in my head where I [wonder] what the most interesting thing I would like to see that character do now and it fell right into the ideas I was already cooking for Tony Stark."

Bendis doesn’t reveal exactly what he has planned or the nature of Mary Jane’s relationship with Tony. Still, considering that the series has been solicited with discussion of a new love interest for Iron Man, it’s not hard to connect the dots here and wonder if this is the beginning of a surprising new super couple.

To be fair, Peter and Mary Jane haven’t been a serious item for quite a while. They were once married, of course, until Marvel decided in 2007 that no one was interested in reading the adventures of a Spider-Man who was also a family man. The “One More Day” arc was the result, with Spidey and Mary Jane making a deal with the Marvel devil Mephisto to save the life of Aunt May in return for retroactively rewriting history to erase their marriage. Because comics.

They’ve dated a bit since then, though part of that time was when the mind of Otto Octavius was in control of Peter’s body (once again, comics!). Mary Jane certainly isn’t sitting around pining for Peter, so if she’s moving on with Tony, c’est la vie. It’s just going to take some getting used to.

Invincible Iron Man #1 goes on sale October 7, and Marvel says Mary Jane will arrive in December.
