It Might be Lex³

There you have it.  The various incarnations of Lex Luthor’s son.  Which one will Snyder and Terrio draw from?  I’d say all three of them.  Here are the reasons why I suspect that Lex Luthor, Jr. in the DC Extended Universe will be a conglomeration of past comic incarnations:

  • The famous green and purple battlesuit is heavily rumored to appear in the film.  This alludes to the Lex Luthor in the pre-Crisis continuity.  Though it wasn’t a suit the infant Lex Luthor, Jr. owned, the suit does reference or, at least, pay homage to that storyline.
  • Lex Luthor, Jr. may end up being killed by the Joker — just like the fate of Alexander Luthor, Jr. of Earth-Three.
  • Like Alexander Luthor, Jr., the DC Extended Universe’s Lex Luthor, Jr. most likely has a deeper, more sinister plan.  Alexander Luthor, Jr.’s ultimate goal was to use the energies of all heroes and villains to create a multiverse and then create an ultimate Earth from its parts.  Lex Luthor, Jr. may have a scheme that involves using any meta-human or super-powered being to do his bidding in some way.
  • A very likely scenario is that Lex Luthor, Jr. is actually Lex Luthor, Sr. in a younger, cloned body, just like what was seen in the Modern Age Lex Luthor II.  Could the death of Lex Luthor, Sr. — alluded to in the in-movie Fortune magazine article — be a ruse?  After all, in the latest Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, we saw Lex Luthor, Jr. take possession of General Zod’s corpse.  Could Luthor be deteriorating already?  There is that famous first-look black-and-white photo of Jesse Eisenberg as a bald Lex Luthor (hair loss was one of the signs of Lex Luthor II’s deterioration in the comics).  Perhaps he thinks the answer to his survival can be found in Kryptonian biology.

Whatever choices Snyder and Terrio make, the news of Jesse Eisenberg being Lex Luthor, Jr. is definitely exciting, as it opens up a whole slew of possibilities in the DC Extended Universe.  It also gives the appearance of Lex Luthor, Sr. —  Superman’s true enemy — an air of mystery and weight.  Sometimes, an unseen looming enemy in the shadows is much more threatening than just straight out introducing him.
