Agents of SHIELD is getting a new addition to the cast, but it’s someone who’s not new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And no, it’s not one of the Avengers or another one of the Asgardians.

Marvel announced today that Powers Boothe is joining the cast in a recurring role as Gideon Malick. The Emmy Award-winning veteran actor made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in The Avengers, as Malick was a member of the World Security Council, the otherwise unexplained world leaders to whom Nick Fury reported.

The announcement describes Malick as “a notorious man whose loyatlies remain a mystery,” but since this is Agents of SHIELD, that description could apply to a lot of characters. One wonders if he’ll be the go-between for the ACTU and the government, as Rosalind Price can’t keep getting direct orders from the White House every week … Can she?

One thing that can’t be argued is that Boothe makes for a perfect shady dude.

“Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear,” Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb said to Marvel.com “Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”

No word on when we can first expect to see Boothe show up, but the timing of the announcement makes it likely we’ll see him soon. Agents of SHIELD is back with its third episode of Season 3, “Devils You Know,” on Tuesday, October 20.
