Ben Affleck Might Direct A Batman Movie, If There’s Time…

In the latest issue of Total Film magazine, Ben Affleck, our Batman for the forseeable future, says he’d love to direct a solo Batman flick. If he could make it work:

"Look, if I could make it work, yeah. Obviously it would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it. Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea."

Producer Charles Roven points out that part of making something like that work would be fitting it into Ben Affleck’s very busy schedule:

"He’s got a busy schedule. He’s about to start a movie now [Live By Night]. And he’s also got obligations to be in the Justice League movies. The calendar is a bit tricky."

This news actually flies in the face of earlier reports that Warner Bros. execs were so estactic over the latest cut of Batman v Superman that they wanted a solo Batman trilogy with Ben Affleck to direct. In fact, it was specfically stated that production on Live By Night was delayed so Affleck could direct at least one Batman film before doing that more personal project.

So are any of those rumors true? I have no doubt at least one solo Batman film is in the plans. Affleck and Warner Bros. could simply be playing it very close to the chest, be in the process on finalizing a deal, etc. Affleck is an incredibly director so it would certainly behoove Warner Bros. to do whatever the have to in order to get Affleck on board for a director gig for any of their movies, but obviously Batman might be the most fitting choice.
