Batman Unlimited: Mech vs. Mutants will be released on September 19, 2016!

A third installment in the Batman Unlimited animated film series is on the way this year.  Titled “Batman Unlimited: Mech vs. Mutants”, it will be released on September 19, 2016 according to an Amazon listing.  Not much information regarding this film has been released yet, but this past week, Kevin Riepl, who scored the first two Batman Unlimited films, confirmed via Twitter that he had finished up his work on this third one.  Not only is this a big year for Batman on the big screen, but also on the small screen, as this will be the fifth Batman animated movie released in 2016.

While no official description of Mech vs. Mutants has been revealed, I have my ideas on who it might include.  In the Batman Unlimited shorts series, there were two villains featured who did not make appearances in either of the first two films: Bane and Mr. Freeze.  Depending on the iteration of Bane, he could be considered a mutant, and Mr. Freeze’s suit could be considered mech.  In that case, the title would suggest the two villains are at odds, which would be a nice change of the status quo of these movies, in which the Batman and some of his allies fight against a villain team-up.  Deathstroke and Two-Face have also been included in the toy line, so if either of them play a role as well, I would be pretty thrilled.

In terms of heroes, my guess is that they go with Batman, Nightwing, and Red Robin, joined by two other Justice Leaguers again.  In the first film, the Bat-family was joined by Green Arrow and The Flash (no doubt to promote the CW TV shows), and in the second film they were joined by Green Arrow and Cyborg.  If they stick with two Leaguers helping out again, I could see them going in two directions.  In one scenario, we’d get The Flash and Cyborg starring in Mech vs. Mutants, so that each of the three aforementioned heroes would have appeared in two out of the three movies each.  Superman is a fourth hero that has appeared in the toy line, so I could also see him teaming up with either Green Arrow, Cyborg, or The Flash.  Superman would certainly be helpful against Bane, something that both Superman: The Animated Series and The Batman have played around with in the past.

Whatever direction they do decide to go in, I’m excited for it!  Both of Mech vs. Mutants’ predecessors were solid movies that gave me my Batman cartoon fix during his current absence from animated television series (which will now be resolved with Justice League Action!).  Let me know any wishes you have for the upcoming film in the comments, and be sure to keep it locked to Caped Crusades for continuing coverage of Batman Unlimited and for all your Batman news!
