Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad Dominating Social Media

Fans are talking a lot about Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad on social media!

Variety publishes weekly rankings of social media activity relating to TV and movies, and both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad are dominating the movie rankings!  Dubbed the “ListenFirst Digital Audience Rankings”, fan engagement on Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube, and Wikipedia is tracked.  While not a definitive predictor of how successful a film will be, this certainly seems like a good indicator of how much movies are on fans’ minds.

With that said, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad’s stamps on social media are currently 500% stronger at the same pre-release points than their comic book movie competitors from Marvel, which include Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Doctor Strange.  This is extremely encouraging news, because if these DC Extended Universe films are good, enough eyes will have been on them for them to gain the upper hand on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the Variety article releasing this statistic, Jason Klein also provided the latest weekly film DAR, for Wednesday, January 20 to Tuesday, January 26, 2016.  Taking the number one spot is Suicide Squad.  I know some fans are more excited for Suicide Squad than they are for Batman v Superman, but Suicide Squad’s place at the top of the list is surely for the most part a direct result of the trailer dropping the day before the time range of the list.  Batman v Superman clocks in at #4 on the list, behind Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Deadpool.  That’s certainly understandable, given that the Neighbors 2 trailer also dropped on January 19, and Deadpool has the first comic book movie release date of 2016.
