Update On Captain Marvel Film Coming Soon

Kevin Feige has revealed that news about the Captain Marvel film, due in 2019, will be coming later this summer.

Of all the films currently slated to be parts of Marvel’s Phase Three set of films, the one we know the least about is Captain Marvel. Other than that it will feature the Carol Danvers version of the hero and the release date, fans know almost nothing about the forthcoming movie. A plot, casting, a director, nada.

And no, Ronda Rousey announcing she wants to play Captain Marvel doesn’t count.

Considering the film is scheduled in between the two Avengers: Infinity War films and it is assumed Captain Marvel will be playing a key role in those movies, Marvel Studios can forgive us for being just a bit concerned.

Thankfully, it would seem some information is on the way, and sooner than you might think.

While answering questions at the press day for the third Captain America movie, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked by Fandango about the status of the Captain Marvel film and if any progress has been made in terms of finding a director and casting.

"“I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer.”"

Reading between the lines, it sure sounds like we should have a director announced sometime next month, around when Captain America 3 hits theaters and then some casting news just in time for San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Now, as far as who should direct Captain Marvel, I happen to be in the small minority who feel that having a female director for the film isn’t really necessary. Unlike the Wonder Woman film, where having a woman in the director’s chair was absolutely a must due to the history and importance of the character, that isn’t the case for Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers is now the fourth person to call themselves Captain Marvel, and the second time a woman has taken on the role. To my mind, the fact the character is a woman is less significant than in a case such as Wonder Woman. Yes, this will be the first Marvel film to star a female in the title role but not the first strong, kickass woman to be featured in a Marvel movie. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Hayley Atwell’s Agent Peggy Carter have already laid claim to that title.

Having someone as talented as Angelina Jolie, whom Marvel has been rumored to be pursuing to take the job of directing the film, would be great. But in this case I just don’t think it should be a deal breaker.

That, and I just want Captain Marvel to be a great movie. The character has such a ridiculous amount of potential to be just as amazing on the big screen as she is in the comic books. Finding the right director with the correct vision for the film should trump whether that person is a man or a woman.

Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicks off with Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016. Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 6, 2018.
