Is Three A Crowd For The Green Lantern Corps?
By D. Goodman
Word has leaked that Warner Bros. is looking for the Green Lantern Corps movie to feature three human Lanterns in the film, but could that be overkill?
It is a safe bet that some executives at Warner Bros. still have nightmares over the ill-fated Green Lantern film that was released in 2011.
Starring Deadpool‘s Ryan Reynolds, the film was supposed to jumpstart Warner’s DC Comics film franchise to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, the movie was an unmitigated disaster with a confusing story and an over reliance on CGI effects that resulted in one of the most notorious superhero bombs ever seen.
If you were one of the unfortunate few who paid good money to go and see it in a theater, you have my sympathies.
So the fact that Warner Bros. is looking to try and distance it self as much as possible from that fiasco should surprise no one. Green Lantern won’t be making an appearance in Justice League Part One and the Green Lantern movie, titled Green Lantern Corps, won’t hit theaters until 2020.
And now we may know which Lanterns are going to be in it.
The website Latino Review.com is reporting that according to their sources, viewers won’t get just one, but three human Lanterns in the film. They are saying that Green Lantern Corps will feature an older Hal Jordan in addition to John Stewart and, in a bit of a surprise, Kyle Rayner.

It would seem that Warner Bros. is making an effort to cut down the need for special effects and keep the film more human, which was one of the major criticisms of the first Green Lantern movie. By having three human leads, it should help viewers feel more connected to the characters and give the film the buddy movie vibe they are apparently going for.
In addition, if this rumor does prove true, it would make Green Lantern Corps one of the most ethnically diverse superhero films yet. Jordan is a Caucasian while Stewart is African-American and Rayner is of Mexican decent.
But in looking to make Green Lantern Corps stand apart from 2011’s Green Lantern, is Warner Bros. going too far the other way?
Let’s be honest here: many fans are going to go into Green Lantern Corps with visions of Reynolds in his CGI Lantern uniform still in their minds. More than almost any other superhero film, this one has a lot of baggage to live down. So the desire to go in a different direction makes complete sense.
However, will moviegoers who haven’t read the comics be able to keep track of everyone in the cast? If DC plans to introduce many of the non-human Lanterns as well, it could be a confusing mess for someone not used to the history and continuity of the comics.

A lot of that will be answered once the cast is in place and who they choose to direct the film. Needless to say, it SHOULD NOT be Zach Snyder and instead be someone who can work with a large cast and make each individual stand out while telling a complete narrative.
Can Green Lantern Corps live down the legacy of the first Green Lantern movie? We will have a while to wait as it won’t hit theaters until June 19, 2020.
