As Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year Five draws closer to the end, author Brian Buccellato is managing to bring everything together for a gigantic finale. Superman is still playing cat and mouse with an unaware Bizarro while Lex Luther is not only aiding the Man of Steel but trying to defeat him at the same time. Once again Mike S. Miller pens terrific artwork to go along with a great story.

The chapter begins with the regime (Superman, Wonder Woman, Yellow Lantern Hal Jordan, and Cyborg on the coms) searching the globe for the individual that could challenge Superman’s ability. Superman may have lost his humor, but always humorous Hal Jordan managed to sneak in a sly joke just to piss the leader of the Regime off.

Through five years as the head of the regime, Superman has transformed into a very dark person. The boy from Smallville, Kansas has undergone a change, from boy scout to cutthroat leader. Although it’s very unlikely that his demeanor will change, it’s refreshing to see that Hal Jordan still delivers witty jokes to lighten up the mood.

Bizarro is an alien on borrowed time, and he does not even know it. The otherworld Superman recently dropped his best friend the Trickster resulting in his death. Bizarro was in desperate need to revive his friend so he takes him to the one man he believes he could “fix,” him, the scientist who defrosted Bizarro Lex Luthor.

In the brief communication between himself and Bizarro, Luthor realized that he was the one who had given life to the only other individual on the planet that could rival Superman’s power. He knows that he must handle the situation before Superman gets wind that Luther was the person who had breathed life into the abomination.

While Luthor is dealing with Bizarro, he receives a call from Superman informing him that Flash is on his way to finalize the plans for the new supermax prison dedicated to housing criminals and resisters of the Regime. Luthor managers to convince Bizarro that the only place where he would feel safe is far away at the Fortress of Solitude.

Once Bizarro arrives at the Fortress of Solitude, he has greeted by none other than Doomsday and the chapter ends with the two titans commencing in battle.

The Bottom Line: It’s hilarious to witness Lex Luthor ushering Bizarro out of his lab like a schoolgirl sneaking her crush out of her house late at night. The key thing to watch for moving forward will be Superman’s reaction when he realizes that not only did Luthor breathe life into Bizarro but he also had Doomsday as an emergency resource for not only Bizarro but probably for Superman as well.

Another key issue to remember is that Batman and Superman have not come in physical contact with each other this year at all. With everything that has been happening the leader of the Regime and the head of the Resistance have barely been on the same continent let alone the same room for any significant amount of time during this fifth year.

When the two former lifelong friends come face to face sparks will fly. Superman has been itching to get his hands on Batman while the Dark Knight will already have procedures in place ready to neutralize the last son of Krypton for good.

It’s hard to top killing the Joker, but Buccellato has achieved that with his fantastic writing skills in Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year five. Every chapter has felt like it mattered, even issues where not much development took place, it still felt critical to the overall story. As Year Five draws to an end, one can only help but wonder how will Buccellato end this wild roller coaster of a comic?
