Supergirl Season Two In Jeopardy
By D. Goodman
It would seem that a second season of Supergirl might not be the sure thing many of us thought it was going to be.
In early March, CBS CEO Les Moonves announced that the network had plans to renew all of the network’s freshmen shows. While that was far from an actual renewal, fans saw it as a very good sign that all of the new series that year would be back.
Including Supergirl.
While Supergirl never quite performed the way the network wanted, it still had a loyal fanbase and a ton of potential to grow in the future. A second season seemed like a given and fans just waited for the official announcement while debating who exactly was in the Kryptonian pod.
Unfortunately, it looks like those plans may have hit a slight snag.
It is being reported by The Wrap that a second season for Supergirl is looking less and less likely. A combination of low ratings and the $3 million per-episode licensing fee that CBS pays to air the show is the main sticking point for the network. $3 million is the highest fee ever for a show in its first season and that has Moonves and CBS balking at the idea of bringing Supergirl back for a Season 2.

Lucky for all of us, Moonves is a fan of the show wants to bring Supergirl back, so there is still hope.
The most natural solution is to move Supergirl over to the CW, which is run by both CBS and Warner Bros. Considering how much of the intended audience for Supergirl already watches the CW and the natural connection to the DC shows already airing on the network, it should make for improved ratings.
The one pitfall would be the fact that the budget for the show would have to be slashed, and pretty drastically. While no one working on Supergirl want to see that happen, if they want the show to go on they may not have a choice.
It is being reported by Deadline that Warner Bros. is considering moving production for Supergirl to Vancouver from Los Angeles in order to save money. While no one in the cast or crew are thrilled with the idea, they all want to see a second season and this might be one way to make that happen.
In addition, if Supergirl is looking to save money, another obvious place to start would be with the cast. There are several regulars who could be removed and the show wouldn’t even miss a beat. Jeremy Jordan could be axed with no effect and, if it things got desperate, Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant could be replaced with an actor who wouldn’t need such a high salary.
The special effects, which were pretty impressive for a network television show, would also take a huge hit. But given that The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow seem to do fine with the resources they have, that shouldn’t even be a concern.
The important thing is that if any or all of these thing happen, the core of Supergirl would remain the same, which is all that really matters.
