In a recent interview, Hugh Jackman left the possibility open that he could return to the X-Men movie universe as Wolverine.

As every fanboy worth his or her longboxes is aware, the forthcoming Logan will be Hugh Jackman’s final appearance on screen as Wolverine. After spending the last 17 years making at least a cameo in every X-Men film to date, Jackman has finally decided to hang up the claws and close the curtain on his time with the character.

More from Movies

Logan, the third standalone Wolverine film, opens in early March and from every indication it is going to be a huge hit. The movie is getting rave reviews across the board and has many critics calling it the best X-Men movie to date.

Ever since the original X-Men opened in 2000, Jackman’s Wolverine has been the heart and soul of the franchise. A huge reason for that is due to his ability to take what was really a one-dimensional comic book character such as Logan and turn him into a full-fledged person with desires and feelings.

It’s a real shame for X-Men fans everywhere that Jackman has decided to give up the role.

Or has he?

Since day one, Jackman has been adamant that Logan will be his final time playing Wolverine. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he made that assertion once again when asked in he really saw Logan as his final time using the claws.

"“When I had the script, I was like, ‘Yes,’ And when I was shooting the movie, yes. As I sit here today, yes.”"

However, he then added:

"“God knows how I’ll feel in three years. But right now, absolutely.”"

Really? So by 2020 we may have the chance to see the return of the Wolverine? I guess it never hurts to leave the door cracked a bit, no matter how slim the opening.

Now, it should be said that in all likelihood, Logan will indeed be the end of the adamantium road for Jackman. After 17 years and numerous X-Men films, he has more than earned the right to retire. But the thought that he may be open to returning after a break, no matter how small the chance, makes this fanboy’s heart skip a beat.

But if Logan is the end, it looks like Jackman will get to go out exactly as he always wanted. He told the Times:

"“There’s been a gnawing turmoil that I hadn’t really nailed it (the role of Wolverine), fully — either story or performance or whatever. Every film I’ve ever done, I’ve had that gnawing doubt. But I have it way less in this one.”"

Logan opens everywhere on March 3, 2017.
