Marvel has provided a first look at their latest original graphic novel featuring the Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool: Bad Blood.

Deadpool is a character that most fans either love or hate.

Since his debut way back in New Mutants #98, Wade Wilson has waged a one-man war on good taste and what should make for a good comic book. Lots of readers fell in love with Deadpool from day one, while others avoid a book starring the character like the Legacy Virus.

Some of that, I’m sure, has to due with writer/artist Rob Liefeld, the man who created Deadpool. Opinions about Liefeld and what he has added, if anything, to comics can be debated forever. But there can be no argument that Deadpool has been Marvel’s biggest breakout character of the last decade.

More from Comics

Add in a smash hit movie starring Ryan Reynolds and you have a superhero that has joined the likes of Wolverine and Superman in the upper echelon of comics.

Which is why it made complete sense when Marvel announced that the next of their new original graphic novels would star Deadpool and feature plot and art by none other than Liefeld. Titled Deadpool: Bad Blood the book was announced in 2015 and supposed to hit store shelves in 2016.

Only it didn’t.

And considering this is Rob Liefeld we’re talking about, I can’t believe anyone was surprised.

However, Marvel has revealed that Deadpool: Bad Blood is back on the schedule. It is set to be released this May and will feature a story by Chris Sims and Chad Bowers of X-Men ’92 fame. The art and cover will be by Liefeld and Marvel has released a first look at the book.

From the Marvel solicitation:

"Shooting, stabbing and otherwise annoying his way across the Marvel Universe has made Deadpool his fair share of enemies over the years. Even though his sordid past contains no shortage of unfriendly faces, there is one he can’t quite place. A brutal new foe known only as Thumper. Who is this new menace that has the Merc With a Mouth so outmatched and outgunned? What is Deadpool’s past connection to this new baddie?Wade’s journey to uncover the mystery of Thumper will take him across the Marvel Universe and face-to-face with many familiar faces. Cable! Domino! X-Force! Even Star-Lord! Blood will be shed and old scores will be settled. Deadly twists and turns await as Wade Wilson faces one of his greatest challenges yet."

Would this have been more entertaining if it was released when the Deadpool film came out? Sure. But at least unlike a lot of other Liefeld projects, this one is going to actually see the light of day.

Deadpool: Bad Blood will arrive in comic shops and book stores everywhere May 17, 2017.
