Thor: Ragnarok: What’s Up With Thor’s Haircut?

The God of Thunder will be sporting a new haircut in Thor: Ragnarok. We explore the reasons behind it.

More from Movies

There are only a few heroes in this world who are defined by their hairstyle. As “Samson” as that sounds, you can’t deny that their famous locks are one of the attributes that makes them stand out. Imagine Superman without his spitcurl (though he lost it in the recent DC Extended Universe … and look how badly that franchise is doing) and you’ll know what I mean. Now, imagine Thor without his long golden locks.

Today, Entertainment Weekly released a fresh round of official Thor: Ragnarok images, and the first thing people saw was the God of Thunder losing his luxurious Asgardian mane. What’s going on? We at Bam Smack Pow know how passionate fans are when it comes to film adaptations of comics. So this was a daring move on Marvel Studios’ part (no pun intended). Let’s reexamine our favorite Asgardian’s new do from a variety of angles.

Right off the bat, it’s short and spiky. It’s almost a more aggressive Ivy League haircut. However, notice that the sides have shaved line patterns. We’re not sure if they’re part of the hairstyle, or if these are battle scars from his time on Sakaar. We do have a few theories as to why he has this new look:

Practicality

When you’re fighting against the deadliest of warriors, you’re going to want to minimize the amount of things that they can grab onto—and that includes hair. Plus, it’ll just get in the way. But Thor never really had that problem in his past battles. Maybe he just wants one less thing to worry about.

Symbolism

Who really knows how alien cultures work. Long hair may be a symbol of royalty and honor. Perhaps his exile on Sakaar stripped him of his status. The haircut is to just bring him down to the prisoners’ level. If the sides are purposely shaved to have those patterns, it could lend credence to this theory of symbolism.

Just Because

You know, sometimes a dude just wants to mix it up. The God of Thunder has been sporting that 1980s glam rock hair just a bit too long. In the same Entertainment Weekly article that revealed the new images, actor Chris Hemsworth gave his thoughts on the short hair:

"It was nice not to have to sit in the makeup chair for that hour each morning … It felt like a rebirth for me as the actor but also as the character."

Whatever the reasons are, I can say that I really like it. It does give our hero a sort of an edge. Yes, he looks different, but Thor is so much more than just long hair. I think Marvel is doing a great job in giving a bit of a fresh spin that’s not too drastic.

What do you think? Do you like the the short hair? Give us your thoughts in the comments.
