Second Saga Hardcover Arrives In April
By D. Goodman
On Thursday Image Comics announced that Saga Book Two, the second deluxe hardcover collection, will go one sale this April.
There is one thing you have to love about titles that are published by Image Comics. They follow a release schedule for their trade paperbacks that you could set your watch by.
Almost every series follows the exact same pattern: first a trade paperback that collects six or seven issues, then a hardcover that collects anywhere from 12 to 18 issues. That is followed most times by an omnibus of some sort that will collect up to 50 or so issues between two covers.
The result has been that many fans simply read the trade paperback and don’t even bother with the single issues. In the long run, this is better for the creators as they actually make more money from the trades than they ever will from the issues.

Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples is a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
I know lots and lots of people who read and love Saga. They anxiously await new stories featuring Hazel and her star-crossed parents and get physically excited when they know a new collection is coming out.
Yes, I said collection.
Because I know almost no one who reads the ongoing Saga comic. They know about the issues but don’t buy them, instead waiting for the collections that come out once or twice a year. I myself switch to the trades fairly early in the series simply because it read better as a trade than it ever did as individual issues.
On Thursday Image announced that the second hardcover Saga collection will be arriving in comic shops and bookstores everywhere this May. Saga Book Two collects trade paperbacks four through six of the series as well as an all-new collection of Saga inspired artwork.
From the Image press release:
"The multiple Eisner Award-winning creative team of writer Brian K. Vaughan (PAPER GIRLS, WE STAND ON GUARD) and artist Fiona Staples (Archie Comics, North 40) will release the second deluxe hardcover collection of their New York Times bestselling series this April.SAGA: BOOK TWO continues the action-packed education of Hazel, a child born to star-crossed parents from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war. This gigantic hardcover edition collects issues #19-36, plus a brand-new gallery of exclusive, never-before-seen SAGA artwork from legendary creators including Todd McFarlane, Cliff Chiang, Pia Guerra, Faith Erin Hicks, Karl Kerschl, Jason Latour, Sean Gordon Murphy, Steve Skroce, and more!"
