According to James Gunn Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Is Happening
By D. Goodman
In a recent interview, James Gunn confirmed that a third Guardians of the Galaxy is going to happen, just maybe without him.
With the release of the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 only weeks away, fan excitement is growing by the day. Combined with the fact that Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok are now in post-production and that Avengers: Infinity War has begun filming, Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in full swing.
Of course, that now means questions have begun about Phase Four and what moviegoers can expect.
It is common knowledge that many of the current stars plan to move on once Phase Three is finished, including Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. It means that big changes might be on the way regarding the core members of the Avengers, whether that means recasting some roles or killing some heroes off.

Other properties won’t face that problem for a while yet. Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel are just beginning their movie lives so they should be good for a decade or more.
Then there is the Guardians of the Galaxy.
With Vol. 2 sure to be another massive hit, of course it goes without saying that a third film will be a part of Phase Four. All the cast members should still be under contract so that won’t be an issue yet and since they stand apart from the rest of the film universe, they can do what they want without worrying about the rest of the overall MCU plot line.
However, it turns out that the Guardians of the Galaxy might have to go on without one of their most important members.
James Gunn, who directed both films, might be one of the most important directors Marvel has. His style and unique voice is all over the GotG films and the thought of the studio making one without him is unthinkable.
But we might have to get used to the idea.
Gunn was recently interviewed by Complex and while he confirms that a third Guardians film will almost certainly happen, he might not be around to direct it.
"“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”"

If Gunn does decide to move on after GotG Vol. 2, it will be a huge hole and one I’m not entirely sure Marvel will be able to fill. His vision will be impossible to replicate and any director they find willing to take the project on will be compared to Gunn mercilessly.
There is still plenty of time and if Marvel really wants to keep Gunn, they will find a way. But for now, we can all enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it opens May 5, 2017.
