Preview: Nick Fury #1 From Marvel
By D. Goodman
Marvel Comics has provided a preview of the first issue of Nick Fury, the new ongoing series by James Robinson and ACO.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe that some people were upset about Marvel Studios casting Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But of course there were folks who made a stink about Fury, a white character in the comics, being recast as an African American. They never bothered to mention or understand that Jackson’s Fury was based on the Ultimate version of Nick Fury, who was not only black but visually inspired by Jackson himself.
Crap like that really makes me weep for fandom on occasion.

Anyway, flash forward a few years and the MCU is a massive hit with just about everyone. In order to try to get more people who see the movies to actually go to a comic book store, Marvel decides to make the Marvel Universe of the comics more similar to the films.
And one of the big ways they did this was to create a black Nick Fury.
Introduced in the Battle Scars miniseries, new character Marcus Johnson was revealed to be the son of Nick Fury. Taking the name Nick Fury Jr. (original, I know) he joined the Secret Avengers and started running around with the Marvel Comics version of Phil Coulson.
And now Marvel is giving Fury an ongoing series of his own.
Nick Fury #1 will arrive in April and will be written by James Robinson with artwork by ACO. The series will tell shorter tales that will channel the spirit of Jim Steranko’s classic adventures featuring the older Fury.
From the Marvel solicitation:
"The world is a more dangerous place than ever. It needs dangerous men to keep it safe. That’s where he comes in. When you need a lone agent to infiltrate, capture, uncover or destroy – there’s no one better than Fury! Whether it’s aboard a speeding train, in the underwater city of Atlantis or even the surface of the moon – Fury gets the job done! His first mission? A trip to the beautiful French Riviera! Only this is no vacation. Amid the bright casino lights and beautiful picturesque vistas, there’s something foul at play."
