This may come as good news for those who weren’t completely happy with Zack Snyder’s 2009 adaptation of Watchmen. Via FilmBuffOnline, we have reports that Warner Bros. may be developing a feature-length animated film adaptation that will be R-rated.
Like most of Zack Snyder’s work, the film adaptation was quite polarizing. Critics didn’t completely trash it like the recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but still gave it a lukewarm reception. Some fans loved the faithful aesthetics of the film—describing it as the graphic novel come to life. Other fans of the original work disliked the ending and thought the film diluted Alan Moore’s original theme.
Like the current trend of “reboots” and “reimaginings,” Warner Bros. is hoping to get a second chance with fans. Information about the project comes from an online marketing survey that a FilmBuffOnline reader posted:

As you can see, the studio hopes to be as faithful to the source material as possible. And the keyword “upcoming” gives us the sense that this is a project that has been greenlighted.
A made-for-video R-rated film could prove to be very lucrative. Warner Bros.’ recent move into more adult fare has been somewhat successful. Batman: The Killing Joke—another Alan Moore story—saw a video release and a limited theatrical release in 2016. Although critics and audiences panned it (due to the ridiculous Barbara Gordon backstory and her equally ridiculous relationship with Batman), the project did gain a lot of interest during its initial announcement.

Watchmen, published from 1986 to 1987, is considered to be one of the greatest comic stories ever written, elevating the medium to something seen as serious literature. The comic also cemented Alan Moore as one of the greatest comic book writers.
