Gunn, who regularly chats with fans through social media, confirmed through a Facebook post that he will, in fact, return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the lengthy post, the director discussed how it took him a while to make the decision, but ultimately decided that it was definitely what he wanted to do.

I think I speak for everyone when I say this is great news. The folks at Marvel Studios deserve a lot of credit for taking a risk by making a Guardians of the Galaxy film, but no one can deny that James Gunn has been the beating heart and driving force of the series. From establishing the tone to choosing the songs that play in the films, Gunn’s fingerprints are all over the franchise.

This is also a good thing for Marvel Studios, as Kevin Feige and company will not have to worry about searching for a new director for the inevitable third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Recently, the studio has been maintaining its stable of directors with people like Gunn, Joe and Anthony Russo, and Peyton Reed. This not only makes things easier for the company, but it also sustains creative consistency within the MCU.
