Nebula Was To Be Killed Off In Guardians Of The Galaxy
By Erik Swann
It seems that Nebula was going to have a different fate in Guardians of the Galaxy.
When Guardians of the Galaxy was released in theaters a few years ago, it produced a number of fan-favorite characters. One of these was Nebula, Gamora’s jealous, adopted sister. Despite being a villain in the film, the character proved to be quite popular and was even given an expanded role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, this was not always the plan for her.
Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, revealed in an interview with Digital Spy that the character was originally supposed to die in the first film. She explained that she knew this after being cast, but still felt that the character could be developed further:
"“No, I did not [foresee a character arc for Nebula] actually. I definitely had a feeling that there was room for the character to expand in the future, but she was originally supposed to die in the first movie, I think I remember in the script.”"
The actress then recalled her delight in finding out that the character would play a larger role in the sequel:

"“She obviously did not die, then I found out that she was coming back in the second movie and then I found out we got to explore all these amazing things about her past and her relationship with Gamora, her sister, so I was really happy.”"
Gillan has definitely come to love the character. As a matter of fact, she has even been trying to pitch a spin-off featuring Nebula and Gamora. At the London premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, she continued to do so despite that fact that she’s unsure if it would happen:
"“I’m waiting for this [spin-off] because obviously this needs to happen. I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen, but I would love it. I think it would be amazing to see a female-driven film like that. We have Captain Marvel coming up, which is quite exciting. We could do with some more females at the forefront.”"

There’s no denying that Nebula has become a popular character, and the idea of a film focusing on her and her sister would be interesting. But it’s safe to say that the project probably won’t come to fruition. Still, fans can always imagine what a “Daughters of Thanos” movie would look like.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 lands in theaters on May 5, 2017.
