Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 Beats Projections With An International Haul of $101.2 Million
By Steve Lam
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earns $101.2 million internationally as it beats initial projections.
Not bad … not bad at all. Keep this in mind, the teaser for 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy left general audiences scratching their heads:
The chubby guy from Parks and Recreation leading a team composed of an MMA fighter, Uhura with green skin, a trash panda (fans who have seen the latest sneak peek will get that reference) voiced by the sexiest man alive (People Magazine ranked him, not me), and a talking tree?

When it finally hit theaters, the same laypeople, who were confused by this concept, left the theater knowing each and every one of these characters’ names—Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. Marvel Studios, with its golden touch and knack for emotional storytelling, had another hit on their hands.
Going off that, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that industry analysts would project Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to earn $85–$100 million in its international debut. However, they were just a bit off. Deadline is reporting that since its debut last Tuesday (April 25, 2017), the sequel has pulled in a whopping $101.2 million so far!
The United Kingdom was the biggest contributor to this weekend’s revenue at $15.5 million. Like the UK, the film was a top earner in other countries as well:
- Australia–$11.6 million
- Germany–$8.3 million
- France–$7.9 million
- Mexico–$7.6 million
- Brazil–$6.9 million
- Italy–$4.1 million
- Indonesia–$3.4 million
- Spain–$3.3 million
- Philippines–$3.2 million
This is only the beginning. The film will most likely see the largest portion of its haul this weekend when it debuts domestically. Analysts are projecting the four-day (counting Thursday night previews) US box office earnings to be $150 million. Definitely not bad for a team of misfits who, just a few years ago, most people didn’t even know about.
