Since Warner Bros. revealed that a Suicide Squad sequel is in the works, there have been a number of reports regarding possible plot details and potential directors. But one thing that hasn’t been mentioned is a start date for production. Now, it looks like we may have a better idea of when things will start moving on the project.

While discussing the new season of House of Cards with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Joel Kinnaman confirmed that the film is in active development and could possibly begin filming next year:

"“As far as I know, they’re writing the script, and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”"

Kinnaman also talked on who he would like to see in the director’s chair as well as what he wants to see happen in the film:

"“Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well.”"

The critical and fan response to Suicide Squad was “mixed” to say the least. However, the film still finished with nearly $746 million at the box office, which absolutely justifies a sequel.

Despite being in development, it remains to be seen if the movie actually starts production next year. The script is still being worked on and there’s still the matter of hiring someone to helm it. But, with Warner Bros. and DC Films’ desire to get the film out and interest from directors like Mel Gibson and Guy Ritchie, there’s a solid chance that we could see Task Force X’s next adventure sooner rather than later.
