Death Note: First official trailer released

The official trailer for Netflixs Death Note has been released.

In 2003, the Death Note manga series was released. The manga was first serialized in Shueisha’s manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. After gathering great reception, the manga was adapted to an anime in 2006. This is where Death Note really took off, gaining huge success internationally.

When a bored Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk wants to spice things up a bit, he drops a notebook titled “Death Note” into the human universe. This is when a genius high school student named Light Yagami discovers the notebook. After experimenting, he discovers that if a name is written in the notebook, they would die—as long as the writer has seen the person’s face. It was at this point where he meets Ryuk and explains his plan to rid the world of criminals—until he is investigated by a world-famous detective known as “L.”

Through the years, the anime has gathered a huge fan base. When the Netflix live action movie was announced, there was a mixed reaction. The main issue was the movie taking a westernized route. Many fans have voiced their concerns, so perhaps the release of the official trailer may change their tone.

In the trailer, we see a number of things: Willem Dafoe’s take on Ryuk; Light’s slow descent into insanity; and L’s mysterious behavior. We see quite a few call backs to the anime in the trailer, such as the loyal Kira followers and L’s unorthodox sitting position. However, the jury is still out for the movie. In a time where Hollywood’s take on anime classics have been subpar, we hope Death Note can provide something different.
