Kevin Feige gives his thoughts on the timeline controversy caused by Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has kept to a very specific timeline. However, Spider-Man: Homecoming featured what appeared to be a pretty significant continuity error. The film’s prologue depicted Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) directly after the battle of New York in The Avengers. Following the scene, the words “Eight Years Later” appear before bringing us to the present time of the movie.

This came as a bit of a surprise to MCU diehards, and now, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is speaking out on the matter.

While talking with Cinema Blend, Feige explained that the text was not intended to confuse anyone and he assured that the movie does line up with the timeline:

More from Movies

"“All of that debate has made us go, ‘Okay, at some point, I’m not sure exactly when, we’re going to publish a timeline and see what it all is.’ It wasn’t meant to flummox anybody exactly, and I’m not sure I’d do it again the same way, but it does all connect to where we placed it. Other than very particular instances where there’s a newspaper, or verbal reference to years, we never date the films. And I think there’s a presumption, ‘Well if the movie came out in November 2017, it must take place in November 2017’ — which is not the case.”"

He also talked on his personal fascination with timelines and how the MCU is taking a cue from Star Wars by using one key event as the focal point:

"“The specifics of the timeline, looking at… I’ve loved timelines, I love the Star Wars timeline, with the Battle of Yavin, everything is either After The Battle Of Yavin, Before The Battle of Yavin. We’re doing that, and the origin point for us is Tony saying, ‘I am Iron Man.’ So everything will be years after that, years before that — to the Big Bang, which is where it starts! It will look very cool and complex like Doc Brown on a chalkboard by the time it’s published.”"

The MCU timeline is definitely becoming tedious, and fans are very particular about it. Just this year many were quick to ask James Gunn about a small continuity error in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

It’s honestly still difficult to see how everything lines up right now, but if anyone would know the exact sequence of events, it would be Feige. And, who knows? Maybe he knows something about the timeline that we don’t.
