Princess Shuri has a key role in Black Panther
By Erik Swann
Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman says that Princess Shuri will have an important role in the film.
One of the characters that audiences will meet for the first time in Black Panther is T’Challa’s younger sister, Shuri, who is played by Letitia Wright. Apart from being the princess of Wakanda, she’s also the driving force behind the country’s technology. Now, it appears that the tech prodigy will have a significant role in the story.
While speaking with CNET, Chadwick Boseman discussed Shuri and expressed his belief that she’ll change the way people look at women in the tech industry:
"“If anyone doesn’t think there’s a place for women in tech, it’s completely demolished in this movie.”"
The actor then went on to say that the character’s vast knowledge of technology makes her role vital to the story:
"“Her role is the most important. In the comic book, T’Challa is a scientist and a king, but my sister is the whiz kid. She is the one with that gift. She’s the Tony Stark of Wakanda. She’s witty, she’s cool, she’s funny. Now, T’Challa is good in science too, but she’s the whiz. That’s the way the story’s been told forever. T’Challa is technologically sound. He’s a scientist as well, but she’s the minister of technology.”"

I think it’s safe to say that we really don’t see many characters like Shuri in movies let alone massive blockbusters. It’s not often that a film features a woman who’s so in tune with technology, especially a young woman of color.
With Shuri’s skills, the fact that she’ll have an important part to play is completely understandable, and judging by reports, this is only the beginning for her. A few months ago, Wright was reported to be reprising the role in Avengers: Infinity War, and was recently spotted on the set.

We’ll have to wait and see what Shuri specifically adds to the story, but it can be said that she has the potential to be one of the MCU’s most interesting characters. And, maybe she’ll even make an interesting hero someday.
Black Panther arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018.
