Kevin Feige compares Evans’ Captain America to Reeve’s Superman
Kevin Feige has praised veteran actor Chris Evans for his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America on and off-screen.
Chris Evans debuted as Captain America in 2011 when Captain America: The First Avenger hit theaters. Ever since then, Evans has made the role his own and it’s now hard to imagine any other actor portraying the titular hero. In fact, Evans’ performance as the mighty Captain America has become so beloved and iconic that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has compared him to possibly the most iconic superhero role: Christopher Reeve’s Superman.

Feige sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss his childhood and career, Avengers 4 and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the conversation, Feige brought up the fact that casting Steve Rogers was one of the hardest challenges to overcome and that they initially looked over Evans because of his work on the Fantastic Four movies. He said:
"“Casting Captain America was super hard. I started to think, “Are we not going to be able to find Captain America, and if we can’t, what are we going to do with Avengers? Is the whole thing going to fall apart?” And, then, finally opening ourselves up to Chris Evans, who we had initially sort of just looked past because he was Johnny Storm in a Fantastic Four franchise. Then, bringing him in and showing him the artwork, showing him what was happening in this movie, and he took a weekend to decide.”"
Clearly, Feige and the rest of Marvel were very reluctant about casting Evans as Captain America because, at the time, it was a huge risk. At the same time, Feige doesn’t appear to regret casting Evans at all. Feige compared Evan’s performance to Reeve’s Superman and also acknowledged that the actor has almost become a real-life Steve Rogers.
"He’s a reluctant star, but I think he’s become—and I’ve said this to him—for as amazing as all of our actors are at embodying these characters, every single one of them, he’s one that reminds me, alongside Christopher Reeve, as just like “these are the characters.”I think he’s a great actor, and I think he can do whatever he wants to do, but even when you look at his Twitter account and taking a stand on things, it’s like, “Is he becoming Captain America?” Which I think is great."

Evans will reprise his role as Captain America in Avengers: Infinity War this May and in Avengers 4 in May 2019. These two films might be the last time we see Evans or any of the other original cast members reprise their roles as the Mighty Avengers, but we will just have to wait and see how everything plays out.
