4 things Walter Hamada can do to save the DCEU
3. The DCEU needs some R rated films
The thought of an R rated superhero film was taboo, well not anymore, thanks to the success of Deadpool and Logan. Hamada’s specialty is R rated from Friday the 13th remake to It and everything in between which includes the Conjuring franchise. How could Hamada step into the producer’s chair and abandon a formula that made him so successful? It’s not like the DCEU is without its heroes that could use an R rated movie.
Justice League Dark is one of those movies that could definitely use Hamada’s R rated touch. JL Dark has been in the works for WB for quite some time, but it seems like with a new writer on board and with Hamada as head of the DCEU — things are looking up. There’s no reason to believe that JL Dark won’t be one of the top projects for Hamada, it’s pure horror with a touch of magic following a group of unorthodox heroes who specialize in taking on the supernatural lead by Constantine. A superhero horror film with a guy who’s known for being gritty in Constantine should be rated R.
Imagine what Suicide Squad might have been if they focused on Joker and made the movie rated R, well… with plans of a sequel, Hamada can do just that especially with Gavin O’Connor behind the camera. Another potential R rated film is Deathstroke’s solo film. Slade Wilson’s beginnings involve him being a gifted soldier who becomes a scientific experiment that gifts him superhuman abilities. He, later on, becomes Deathstroke the Terminator, an assassin for hire. Speaking of, the new head of the DCEU could opt to bring back the lost Lobo project. Lobo is a foul-mouthed super powered intergalactic bounty hunter. Then there’s Harley Quinn and Joker a movie that may or not be based on Mad Love.
If the DCEU still plans on going all in with a Harley Quinn and Joker movie then Hamada has to have the freedom to make a rated R film. Nothing about their relationship is PG-13 their adventures involve Joker physically and verbally abusing Harley all while they go on a murderous rampage. However, the guy who thwarts their plans should get his own R rated film, as a matter of fact, Batman needs his own universe within the universe.
