DCEU: A dream cast for Ava DuVernay’s New Gods

Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Big Barda

One of the top actresses of our time, Gugu Mbatha-Raw would make for one fantastic cinematic Big Barda. Her recent films certainly depict Mbatha-Raw as the badass yet complexed character that is Big Barda in the comics. These are films such as The Cloverfield Paradox. Even more, she’s recently worked with Ava Duvernay in A Wrinkle in Time, so the chemistry is definitely there between actor and director.

Mbatha-Raw had perhaps the least screen time in A Wrinkle in Time, event though she had one of the most emotional parts in the entire movie. She is a tremendous underrated actress who definitely has the chops to bring Big Barda to life; not just as a badass warrior, but also as a complex character with all kinds of emotion. Indeed, it’s about time Mbatha-Raw played a superhero. And that superhero should definitely be the New God Big Barda.

Now, perhaps Ava Duvernay may have a different actress in mind for the role, given that Big Barda is her favorite superhero, but I think Gugu Mbatha-Raw would be a fabulous pick.
