30 greatest Deadpool moments in Marvel Comics
By Mark Lynch
28. Wade and Vanessa
Before Wade was a joking mercenary, he was, as he put it, a thug. He took money for jobs and rarely cared about who he hurt. Along the way, he met Vanessa while was a prostitute in Massachusetts. Despite only coming through town every so often, Vanessa loved Wade. One night, Wade told her he wasn’t coming back. Vanessa tried to talk him out of it, but Wade left anyway. This broke her heart.
After Vanessa’s mutant powers kicked in, she spent every opportunity she got making Deadpool pay for hurting her. She’s come between him and multiple paydays, tormented him by trying to trick him into thinking she was different women, and she’s gone so far as to attack Siryn while she looked like Deadpool. Even when Vanessa was dating Wade’s rival and former Weapon-X soldier Garrison Kane, she’d always go back to Wade. I guess it’s true that you never forget your first love.
In the end, Vanessa ended up going crazy after getting her power upgraded by Weapon X. She kept forgetting who she was and couldn’t hold a form too long. Despite all of the things Wade and Vanessa did to each other, Wade did his best to protect her from Weapon X. Deadpool’s best wasn’t enough, as she was killed by Sabretooth.
Before Vanessa died, her lasts words to Wade were, “Wade…I’ll always love you.” Easily one of the saddest moments in Wade’s life.
