Review: Spider-Man/Deadpool No. 41, breaking the fourth wall
Who would say Spider-Man, Deadpool, a road trip and a lot of fourth-wall breaking it’s all that’s needed to make one insanely fun issue? Read our spoiler-free review below!
What do you get when you mix the two greatest heroes ever on a road trip? A lot of super-hero fun. While Spider-Man/Deadpool No. 41 doesn’t advance the plot too much, its titular pair always finds a way to make things as entertaining as they can. And that has been the best feature of this series so far, the chemistry between the good-hearted Wall-Crawler and the explosive Merc With a Mouth. So it’s great to say that feature is best represented here, with our heroes carrying the whole weight of the issue on their shoulders, even if that means there’s not a lot for them to do.
However, not everything is bad, as it appears Spidey and Deadpool will begin a new arc in the series after issue No. 41, meaning a new narrative will soon kick things off. While you can argue that the pair is at is best when just relaxing and talking like normal friends, the series has proved many times before it can tackle amazing stories and dynamics between its titular characters. It’s just a matter of time to see what lies ahead for the series, but for now, let’s discuss issue No. 41
The good: getting meta with Spider-Man
The thing that stands out the most about this issue is how meta it gets. Sure, we’re used to seeing Deadpool break the fourth wall almost every 3 pages in every entry of the saga, but this is the very first-time Spider-Man tries to play that game too. Usually, when Deadpool makes a comment directly to the reader other people around him just ignore him. But that’s not the case here. In fact, Spidey tries to understand just exactly what the Merc With a Mouth is doing and also wants to play along. Needless to say, this is insanely fun, and the type of thing every Spider-Man fan should see at least once in his life.
However, good things don’t stop there. I’m really happy to say that Spider-Man/Deadpool has found its perfect art-style. The series has gone through many different looks during its lifetime. Some of them are better, and others are definitely worse. Fortunately, the last few issues have all had incredible illustrations, and this one isn’t the exception. Not only the attention to detail is insane, but the coloring and action segments all look good. This entry even shows Spidey and Deadpool wearing pajamas while they camp at night. What else can you ask for?

While not a whole lot of things happen on the first pages of the issue, the ending pushes our heroes to new boundaries (and even perhaps, to a new arc in the series). This made me excited for Spider-Man/Deadpool No. 42, and it was a great way to end the issue. (You’ll be missed, road trip arc. You’ll be missed).
The bad
As the latest entries in this incredible series, there’s not too much to say here instead of what I mentioned above: there are not a lot of things going on for most of the story presented. Of course, when there are other issues that are incredibly fast-paced and filled with action, there’s a need for these ones to exist, when our heroes can just slow-down and take a break. However, if this is the first time you dive into the series, you could mistake it as slow and with a narrative that doesn’t take itself seriously. This is not the case, but it’s the impression you could get based only on this issue.
Also, there isn’t a lot of action here either, but that’s not that big of a problem considering how entertaining things are when our heroes are trying to break the fourth wall over and over again. But if you were waiting to see Deadpool cut in half villains with his katanas, you’ll have to wait just a little longer now.
There’s a lot of enjoyment to be found in Spider-Man/Deadpool No. 41, especially if you know what you’re in for. If you don’t expect any mayor plot-twist or mind-blowing action scene, this issue could end up being one of your favorites from the series so far. With its incredibly fun pair of heroes, amazing illustrations and an exciting setup for what’s coming next, it not only manages to be great, but it leaves you waiting for more.
