The tense feud between the Kree and the Skrulls from the comics will spill into the MCU in Captain Marvel.

Marvel Comics readers no doubt know of the famous rivalry between the Kree and the Skrulls. The two warring, alien face have been at each other’s throats for decades, and fans have been waiting to see them duke it out on the big screen. Well, Captain Marvel is going to give them just that.

Captain Marvel executive producer Johnathan Schwartz spoke with Collider, during their set visit, and discussed the centuries-long conflict between the alien factions. The feud will play a key role in the film, but Schwartz stressed that it won’t overstay its welcome:

"“You’ll see as much as is necessary to get Captain Marvel moving on her story. It’s a conflict that’s dealt with in a very real way, hopefully without overloading the audience with exposition which we never want to do.”"

As most know, Carol Danvers is a member of the elite Kree peacekeeping team, Starforce, which is led by Jude Law’s mysterious character. As a high-ranking member of the Kree, he has a fierce hatred of Skrulls, Law told the trade:

"“The Kree and the Skrulls are constantly in conflict, so both communities are living really at high alert and both obviously live with a huge wariness of each other…my character is somewhat judgmental and full of hatred of the Skrulls.”"

Law says this disdain stems from the Skrull’s sneaky and manipulative shapeshifting abilities, which clash with the firm morals of the Kree:

"“The Skrulls to the Krees really represent despicable maneuvering and manipulation. The Skrulls have this way – they can simulate other people, they can turn into other things, and so it’s this idea of subterfuge that you’re not who you really are, whereas the Kree have a kind of purity about them and an honesty, as far I see it.”"

Both the Kree and the Skrulls have had a long and storied history in Marvel Comics. Although both groups were introduced in the ’60s, the friction between them was introduced in the ’70s “Kree-Skrull War” story arc, in the Avengers comic book series. The critically acclaimed nine-issue saga introduced true cosmic warfare to the Marvel Universe and set the tone for the two alien groups going forward.

The moment the Skrulls were announced as antagonists in Captain Marvel, many speculated that the film could incorporate the events of the story. While it won’t be a direct adaptation, Marvel will likely incoporate the most exciting elements. What elements make it into the movie remain to be seen. Carol Danvers and the Kree go to war with the Skrulls when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8.
