Captain Marvel: Gemma Chan teases a strained Starforce team

There’s going to be some tension among the Starforce team when they appear in Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel will introduce a number of new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Carol Danvers’ intergalactic, peacekeeping squad, Starforce. Trailers and TV spots have mostly painted the team as a tight unit, but one of the film’s stars is alluding to some strife within their ranks.

While speaking with ComicBook.com on the set of Captain Marvel last year, Gemma Chan discussed the dynamics of the Starforce team. One aspect she revealed is the growing tension between her character, Minn-Erva, and Jude Law’s enigmatic leader. This relationship is particularly complex due to their bond as mentor and mentee:

"“He definitely was her mentor as well [as Carol’s]. He still is, I should say, not in the past tense. Yeah, I would say actually they have quite a complex dynamic between the two of them. She doesn’t always agree with his decisions. I can say that. But obviously, he is still her mentor and her superior. But yeah, there are a few cracks in that relationship starting to show.”"

Chan also notes that there may be a little bit of a rivalry between Minn-Erva and Carol Danvers, who took the spotlight when she joined the team:

"“[Their rivalry is] not so much [for affection]. I suppose before Carol joined the team, Minn-Erva was probably kinda of the star of this Starforce team, and she was probably the favorite of the commander who is played by Jude Law. So yeah, so I suppose there’s more to do with their abilities rather than affections as such. But yeah, I think there’s a mutual respect, but yeah, someone else who’s also very good at their job. It’s kind of playful rivalry.”"

The idea of there being cracks in the Starforce squad is no real surprise, despite the seemingly ordered image that’s been painted through released footage. Although every member of the team likely plays a key role in their success, Carol Danvers’ immense power could overshadow some of their contributions. This is likely what makes her the apple of Jude Law’s character’s eye, and creates a bit of resentment among the rest of the team.

Speaking of Jude Law’s character, he could also be a major reason for the strife, and not just because of his faltering relationship with Minn-Erva. It has been reported that Law’s character could be the true villain of the film. And if this comes to pass, it could wreck the fabric of the team. Or maybe he is evil, and the others, aside from Carol, are aware. This would line up the team’s villainous roots in the comics.
