Captain Marvel Brie Larson clarifies her comments on inclusion after they drew backlash.
Brie Larson has been an outspoken advocate for inclusion and equality, and her press tour for Captain Marvel has been no different. She recently expressed her desire to have an inclusive press tour that includes more than white, male journalists. These comments drew the ire of some male comic fans online. Now, Larson is following up the comments by adding a little clarity.
While speaking with Fox 5 DC, the actress explained that she was not trying to say that certain journalists should be excluded completely. What she wants is to simply add more people with diverse perspectives to the tour or “table” as she puts it:
"“What I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. No one is getting their chair taken away. There’s not less seats at the table, there’s just more seats at the table.”"

Although Larson’s clarification is welcomed, many would argue that it wasn’t necessary. Many pundits and general fans seemed to understand the point she was trying to convey with her initial comments. Still, some misconstrued the statements as being an attack on a certain demographic. As a result, Captain Marvel has been bombarded with negativity on the web. The most notable instance is the appearance of negative comments on the aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite all of this, Captain Marvel is still drawing positive feelings from critics and fans. The first reactions included mostly high praise for the movie. Additionally, the film has since had an upward surge in ticket pre-sales.
For most, it’s honestly clear to see that Larson wants to provide spots for those who don’t typically have their voices heard in the world of film journalism. And if we’re still being honest, that should be the goal. Having pundits with differing backgrounds and perspectives can only make the film criticism landscape more interesting.
One thing that’s certain is Captain Marvel features diverse characters and actors, and it’ll be exciting to see how they all come together when the movie arrives on March 8.
