How Avengers: Endgame should write off Thor
By Mark Lynch
If Thor’s last movie is Avengers: Endgame, how should he be written off?
The God of Thunder Thor has had more ups and downs in the MCU than most of the other Avengers. He’s lost his hammer, lost both of his parents, become insecure about using his powers, and he’s had to sacrifice his home for the greater good. It doesn’t end there. Thor definitely feels responsible for not killing Thanos when he had the chance, but Avengers: Endgame may be an end to his misery. Everyone thinks Thor is going to die along with Captain America and Iron Man. Between the three major Avengers (Cap, Thor, and Stark) Thor has the best chance to survive this movie. However, his death is still very possible.
Thor: Ragnarok was easily Thor’s best movie, and it may have saved him from being written off in Avengers: Endgame. However, don’t be shocked when the next Thor project is the last time we see Chris Hemsworth as Thor for a long time. Even if he dies, gods tend to not stay dead. Instead of retiring Thor for good, maybe it’s just time for a change.

We’ve already seen Jane Foster as Thor in the Jason Aaron run (Mighty Thor), and she was great. Even Thor admitted that Mjölnir did speak to her and not to him. It wouldn’t be shocking to see another woman wielding the power of a god. Especially since Marvel is doing their best to make the MCU have a more diverse universe. While Jane Foster was phenomenal in the comics as Thor, Natalie Portman as Thor wouldn’t be well received by the fans. The best person for this job would be Valkyrie who’s played by Tessa Thompson.
Valkyrie is older than Thor. We know this to be a fact. She was alive and fighting during Hela’s first attack, and Thor wasn’t around to even know it happened. This means Valkyrie may also be a more experienced fighter than Thor. More importantly, Valkyrie is almost certainly worthy to wield Mjölnir or Stormbreaker. All of this adds up to her more than likely being Thor’s replacement.

Let be honest, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie was one of the best parts of Thor: Ragnarok. Without her, the movie may not have worked as well as it did. She was funny, witty, and one of the toughest people we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since we know that she survived Thanos’ snap and will likely appear in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios must have plans for her in the future. And that future could involve her striking people down with a lightning-infused weapon.
Even if Thor does die in Avengers: Endgame, he could hand Valkyrie the mantle of Goddess of Thunder with his dying breath. It’s a moment that would leave fans with chills and be forever remembered for starting the era of a new God of Thunder.
