X-Men No. 19: Emma betrays mutant kind in a despicable way

What has Emma Frost been up to in X-Men No. 19?

The X-Men have had issues from the beginning of this most recent run. Besides the debacle with X-Man and Legion, there was the issue of the government getting the serum that “cures” mutants. Way back in Uncanny X-Men No. 8, we find out that Anole stole the serum from Beast’s lab. In the next issue, Anole tells Beast that he stole the sample so mutants wouldn’t have to go through feeling like he has all his life. In his own words, “Monsters, Outcasts. Hunted. Feared. Alone.” However, that was only part of the story. We find out that Emma Frost had a hand in this as well.

Emma and her Hellfire Club were attacked by the X-Men who were infected by the Warlock disease and captured by the government.  After she was locked up, General Robert Callahan offered Emma a way out. All she had to do was betray mutants. At first, she refused. After being tortured, she decided to play ball. Emma had Anole steal the serum. He wasn’t alone in this after all. That’s not where the betrayal stops.

Emma found out that both Cyclops and Wolverine were alive. First she went to Cyclops and told Cyclops she loved him and asked him to stay hidden. She also erased his memory of her. She then went to Wolverine and made him want to go to Cyclops and help him. So Wolverine didn’t join up on his own free will. Emma Made him. Guess what? It doesn’t stop here either.

The entire time Cyclops was handing over mutants to Captain America, it was Mystique posing as Captain America. The X-Men have been working for the U.S. Government and Emma Frost this entire time and never knew it. We find this out at the end of the issue. Before it ends, we find out what Logan has been up to. Apparently he didn’t just quit. He found out who Emma Frost was and hunted her down with Kwannon.

X-Marks the Spot

• What else has the government been up to? There’s no way it stops with just Emma Frost. Also, what are they doing with the prisoners?
• How did Logan get his memory of Emma Frost back? The easy guess would be Kwannon. It makes the most sense.
• Is Dark Beast working with Emma Frost as well? Maybe that’s why Cyclops kept him around. She “suggested” to Cyclops that Dark Beast stays.
• I can’t be the only person who can’t wait for Emma to get her hands (or mind) on Robert Callahan. She’s going to do horrible things to him mentally and he’ll deserve all of it.
