Taika Waititi has signed on to write and direct a follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok.

Marvel Studios isn’t set to reveal any future plans until their Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. However, it appears a part of those plans has now been revealed.

THR reports that Taika Waititi has officially signed on to write and direct a fourth Thor film. This move will mark Waititi’s second project with Marvel Studios and the first time the studio has produced a fourth installment in a franchise. As of right now, neither Marvel Studios nor Waititi’s representatives have commented on the deal.

While many will be excited to see Waititi return to Marvel and the character of Thor, this new development has also led to his film adaptation of Akira being delayed. Although Akira, which was already experiencing production problems, now faces an uncertain future, Warner Bros. reportedly still wants to retain Waititi for that project.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige had previously expressed interest in working with Waititi again, but it was unclear as to whether or not it would be on another Thor movie or an entirely different property. But the possibility of a fourth Thor began to increase after Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson claimed the film had been pitched and Waititi would return to direct.

Waititi’s Ragnarok was viewed as a breath of fresh air in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe and as a reinvention of the Thor character. The film was also met with box office and critical success when it hit theaters in 2017. Based on this, it’s no surprise Marvel wanted to ink the New Zealand filmmaker to a new deal.

It’s unclear as to when the God of Thunder’s next adventure will arrive, but there’s no doubt that Waititi and Chris Hemsworth are ready for more of the cosmic MCU.
