Uncanny X-Men: The death, return, and a new era for the X-Men

More X-Men died, but many more returned in Matthew Rosenberg’s final issue of Uncanny X-Men.

2019 has been Hell for the X-Men.

After it looked like Nate Grey (X-Man) eliminated most of the X-Men, Cyclops returned and made a point to set things right. He and Wolverine then put the band back together and ultimately set out to try and eliminate all of their enemies before they could do more harm to the world.

Along the way, however, the X-Men lost a lot of teammates – among them Wolfsbane and Strong Guy. In the previous issue, Emma Frost made the world forget that mutants existed.

This is the final issue of Matthew Rosenberg’s Uncanny X-Men run and it went out with more death and changes to the X-Men.

Death

Havok caught Cyclops thinking and/or sulking in a park as he fed some squirrels. Before the two of them could talk, however, Sentinels appeared and attempted to kill the two Summers brothers.

Havoc sacrificed himself and defeated the Sentinels, but before he vanished, he told Cyclops, “Scott, I always thought you were the best of us. Don’t let me be wrong, okay?” But the deaths didn’t end there.

Cyclops then headed back to the Hellfire Club only to see more Sentinels. General Robert Callahan had a way to protect himself from Emma’s mind control. Wolverine hoped that killing General Callahan would stop the Sentinels.

Multiple Man sacrificed himself to get Logan close enough to kill Callahan, but unfortunately, decapitating him didn’t work. Multiple Man’s sacrifice was for nothing. Even the prime Multiple Man was killed.

The Return

All hope was lost and, just as Wolverine and Cyclops were ready to die fighting, the remaining mutant-hunting robots, there was a flash of light and a familiar voice said, “You boys look like you could use some assistance.” Storm arrived, bringing the rest of X-Men that the world thought were dead.

They had returned and, in doing so, took care of the Sentinels. And when all the carnage ended, Jean Grey walked past Logan and Emma Frost and embraced Cyclops with a passionate kiss in what may just have been the best moment of the series.

This was the first time they’ve both truly been alive and under their own free will since New X-Men No. 150 back in 2001.

A new era begins

A lot has happened over the last 10 years: Wolverine and Cyclops were enemies, Beast left the X-Men and joined the Inhumans, Kitty Pryde became the leader of the X-Men. But now, everyone is back, and it even looks like Mystique is with them. What would this mean?

They whad the chance to disappear forever, to lead normal lives and remain off the grid, but this meant they would have to hide. Cyclops spoke up like the leader he is and said, “We could walk away now, and the world will no longer know we ever existed. They’ll never know what we faced and what we lived through. But I say we stop hiding and stand proud, come what may. Who’s with me?”

Of course, they agreed. Wolverine then reminded him that letting the world know they had returned meant that war would inevitably be declared on the X-Men. Cyclops responded by destroying Cerebro, as he said, “Now I know, Logan. We have always been at war.”
