X-Men: Six new titles were announced and they fit into the MCU
By Mark Lynch
Why these six new X-Men titles are great for Marvel comic book fans and movie goers.
San Diego Comic-Con is a big event for comic book lovers. It’s a time when fans can get information on new things happening in the world of comic books. Sometimes it’s new shows and movies coming in the future. Other times it’s a new addition like Natalie Portman coming back to play Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder. Then there’s the actual comic book news. This year Marvel announced six new X-Men titles. They will kick off a new era for mutants with of House of X and Powers of X.
The new series
X-Men
There’s X-Men with Jonathan Hickman and artist Leinil Yu. This team will have Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rachel Grey (Cyclops’ alternate reality daughter), Corsair (Cyclops’ father), Cable (Cyclops’ son), Havok (Cyclops’ Brother), Wolverine, and the long forgotten Summers’ brother Vulcan. This is one heck of a team.
Marauders
Writer Gerry Duggan and artist Matteo Lolli will take over a team that’s named after Mr. Sinister’s old group. Kitty Pryde (who’s now going by Kate) will lead Emma Frost, Iceman, Bishop, Storm, and Pyro. Whether it’s the original Pyro or the one from X-Men Gold remains to be seen.
Excalibur
Tini Howard and artist Marcus To will be writing this new series led by the new Captain Britain, Betsy Braddock. She’ll be joined by Rogue, Gambit, Rictor, Jubilee, and Apocalypse. The good guess would be that this is Evan, the young Apocalypse. However, with everything that happened to the original Apocalypse in Uncanny X-Men, maybe it’s the first En Sabah Nur.
New Mutants
The original New Mutants team of Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Karma, Magik, and Cypher are joined by Chamber and the Starjammers. This means writer Ed Brissona and artist Rod Reis will be taking their adventures into space.
Fallen Angels
Writer Bryan Edward Hill and artist Szymon Kudranski take a trio of some of the deadliest mutants and put them together. Cable, Kwannon, and X-23 are together to fight a threat that could jeopardize all mutants.
X-Force
Writer Benjamin Percy and artist Joshua Cassara combine and bring you what may be one of the most complete X-Teams ever assembled. How do you stop a team with Jean Grey, Beast, Sage, Wolverine, Colossus, Domino, and Kid Omega? Also, the cover interestingly appears to have Mr. Sinister in the background.

How does this work into the MCU’s future?

All of these teams are different. Not only is Wolverine not on ever roster, but they’re doing some things that will help the X-Men franchise continue to grow. Betsy Braddock is the new Captain Britain. Kate Pryde continues to lead her own team. Even something as simple as bringing back Vulcan and Corsair and putting them on a team with Cyclops and Havok creates a shift. So what does this mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The comics have a way of influencing the movies and vice versa. This looks like Marvel is preparing for a whole new era in the movies.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been doing things in phases and then bringing everyone together for a big event. In the comics, the X-Men tend to remain away from the rest of the Marvel Universe (well, except Wolverine). Going forward, we could be looking at the X-Men as part of the MCU, but they may stay out of the picture until there’s a giant event like House of or Secret Wars.
The X-Men are one of the most beloved teams in all of comic books. Marvel Studios will be handling their MCU debut very carefully. One way to do that is to model it after the current X-Men series. All of these teams have something for everyone. Representation, amazing personalities, incredible powers and characters that would work well on the big screen. If this is what the future of the X-Men in comics and/or in the movies, the mutants will continue make for an uncanny franchise.
