Venom 2: Sony has their sights set on three potential directors

Andy Serkis is just one of three candidates Sony has their eyes on to direct Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson in Venom 2.

Venom marked the first film in Sony’s Spider-Manless universe. Tom Hardy played the role of Eddie Brock, a struggling journalist trying to take down a mogul in Carlton Drake; uncovering the illegal experiments he carried out on humans using alien symbiotes.

Brock would become one with the symbiote Venom, in what turned out to be a rather genreless film, as there was a bit of a romantic comedy, horror, and action all packed into one. Critics weren’t feeling it, however, evident by the 29% score that the film currently holds on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless, fans helped Venom earn over $800 million, and since it made money, it made sense for Sony to continue with the franchise. Venom director, Ruben Fleischer isn’t returning but Sony has their eyes on his replacement. To be more specific, Variety reports that Sony has three candidates in mind.

"“Andy Serkis, Bumblebee director Travis Knight and Rupert Wyatt are among the directors meeting for the coveted job…no one has moved into a front-runner position.”"

None of the aforementioned names stick out more than Andy Serkis – who’s known for his motion caption greatness. Serkis’ most notable roles are in The Hobbit series, Planet of the Apes franchise and even he played King Kong himself in Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake.

However, he’s no stranger to directing. Ironically, Serkis made his solo directorial debut directing Amazing Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield in Breathe. Serkis also directed an all-star cast in the Jungle Book inspired Netflix movie Mowgli.

Like Serkis, the son of Nike founder Phil Knight, Travis Knight is relatively new to the directing game. His directorial debut was the critically-acclaimed Kubo and the Two Strings, and he followed that up with another well-received film in Bumblebee – which, in many ways, rejuvenated the fading Transformers franchise.

He will also direct Mark Wahlberg in The Six Billion Dollar Man set to release in Jun 5, 2020.

The final name of the list is also no slouch. Rupert Wyatt was the man responsible for successfully rebooting the Planet of the Apes. And, ironically, now he’s in competition with the man who helped make the film Rise of the Planet of the Apes such a success (Serkis).

Much like the other men considered, Wyatt’s résumé isn’t a lengthy one. Though, he has directed more films than both Serkis and Knight. His fourth film, Captive State, dropped earlier this year to mixed reviews, and he has two more offerings (Storm King and Slipping into Darkness) set for release in the future.
