Hayley Atwell is content with the end of Peggy Carter’s story in Avengers: Endgame and is prepared to end her run as the character.

Avengers: Endgame provided closure for a number of different characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including SSR agent and SHIELD co-founder Peggy Carter. The film’s ending saw her finally reunite with Steve Rogers, who returned to the 1940s to make a life with her. It’s an ending that most fans were happy to see, and one that Atwell is personally content with.

Speaking with THR, Atwell explained that her scenes were shot in a day in 2017 and that she received the call to come in only a few weeks earlier. The actress went on to express her satisfaction with the final scene between Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers. For two people who’ve been through so many hurdles to be together, she liked that their stories ended on a quiet note:

"“I thought it was a fitting end to a story that has affected so many people. I thought it was very endearing, innocent and wholesome in the way that it keeps those characters in their time. I thought it was quite beautiful and very tasteful of Marvel to finish this 10-year story in a very simple storyline about two human beings — and one of them doesn’t even have any superpowers. So, I thought the tone of it, to end there, after some extraordinary things of trauma, action, effects and powers… to just have two people slow-dancing was very beautiful.”"

When asked how she feels about her time as Peggy Carter, Atwell stated that she feels “fulfilled” and grateful that she was able to take on an interesting character:

"“Oh, yeah! I feel really fulfilled. It was a great time, and I think they ended it beautifully with Endgame. It feels like a fitting end to that narrative. I’m a classically trained theater actor so I want a stab at the challenging parts in the canon for theatrical actresses. That’s something that I’ve always aspired towards. So, I feel lucky to have played her, but she’s one aspect of my career. She’s one part that I’ve played.”"

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Following her MCU debut in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy Carter quickly became a fan favorite, due in large part to Atwell’s performance. In the years that followed, she was able to further develop the character in other films and her own self-titled TV series, Agent Carter. While her time as Carter is winding down, Avengers: Endgame isn’t the last time Atwell will appear as the character. She’s slated to voice her in Marvel Studios’ upcoming animated series What If…?, and she’s also rumored to make a live-action appearance during the final season of Agents of SHIELD.
