Square Enix has unveiled new gameplay footage for Marvel’s Avengers at Gamescom.

Once Square Enix revealed the official title and release date of their secret Marvel project, fans were ecstatic over the prospect of Marvel’s Avengers, set for next summer. Many have even wondered if the game will connect to Insomniac’s Spider-Man.

The story follows Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they  celebrate the announcement of their secondary headquarters in San Francisco during the event known as A-Day. The ceremony goes horribly wrong, as a major catastrophe erupts involving key villains. Fast forward year’s later, and superheroes become outlawed after Captain America supposedly perished during the attack.

Square Enix unveiled the new gameplay footage of Marvel’s Avengers at this year’s Gamescom convention in Germany and has since released it online:

The footage displays Thor battling what appear to be armored gunmen, who seem to carry the Taskmaster skull on the masked headgear they wear. Iron Man joins the Norse demigod in an air battle across the Golden Gate Bridge, as the player is able to light up and thrash foes with the might of Mjolnir.

It is not long before Dr. Bruce Banner, as first seen is the game’s teaser trailer, is about to leap out of the SHIELD Helicarrier before instantly transforming into the Hulk and landing on the bridge. Each member of the Avengers, including Cap, gets their time to shine and their fair-share of on-screen play as the All-American hero intercepts the guards on the Helicarrier.

There are Easter eggs layered throughout, including the aforementioned Taskmaster (who Black Widow gets to fight head-on) and (A.I.M) Advanced Idea Mechanics, who are both somehow behind the planned A-Day crisis and Terrigen crystals. Speaking of Terrigen crystals, fans can also feast their eyes and ready their thumbs for the chance to play as Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel.
