Birds of Prey will not be a sequel to Suicide Squad

While Birds of Prey will continue Harley Quinn’s DCEU story, it is not a sequel to Suicide Squad.

Ever since the release of Suicide Squad – a film that was devoted solely to a whole crew of super-villains as protagonists (if you will) aside from Deadshot – Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has becoming something of an icon.

Taking everything into account, it’s clear to see why, as she was undoubtedly one of the better parts of David Ayer’s entry in the DC Extended Universe.

Screenwriter Christina Hodson tackles the character’s next DCEU appearance, as she has written the script for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

In an interview with Total Film (via Harley Quinn Updates), she discussed her own take on the looming movie, mainly her approach to the “Queen of Gotham City” (as Amanda Waller labelled her), suggesting that Birds of Prey is more of a standalone story than a sequel to Suicide Squad. She commented:

"“Obviously, it’s a character we’ve met before, but it’s really its own story, and that’s kind of how I approached it. I just tried to take myself off-leash. I fell in love with this character, and then all of these other new characters. And I just created a brand new story that felt like its own thing, and that doesn’t have to feel like it follows one or the other.”"

Harley Quinn was part of Task Force X, approved by ARGUS (Advanced Research Group Uniting Superhumans) during the events of Suicide Squad and, after the team’s mission was successful, she was broken out of Belle Reve by The Joker.

It is presumed that between that previous film and Birds of Prey; the anarchy-loving pair became separated, with Quinn venturing out on her own.

More from DCEU

Little is known as to what role she has in the Birds of Prey film, but what is clear from a brief synopsis is that she will side with Dinah Laurel Lance/Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) to form the Birds of Prey, and protect a young Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).

Since the release of Suicide Squad, multiple projects featuring some of these characters have been in development at Warner Bros., such as Gotham City Sirens (though no further updates have been made public save for a meeting with Paul Dini). At one point, a Jared Leto-centric Joker film (separate from the Joaquin Phoenix version) and a Harley and Joker film were also planned. But, as of right now, everything is very much up in the air.
